What Are Home Modifications?

Home modifications are structural or equipment changes made to your home to make it safer and more accessible. These range from minor adjustments like grab rails and ramps to major structural changes such as bathroom modifications, widened doorways, and hoist installations.

Our OT will visit your home, assess your functional needs and the current environment, consult with you and your family, and prepare a detailed report with specific recommendations. We can also work with builders and tradespeople to ensure modifications are implemented correctly.

Minor vs Complex Home Modifications (NDIS)

The NDIS groups home modifications into two types:

• Minor home modifications generally cost less than $25,000 in total and don’t affect the structure of the home. Examples include grab rails, simple ramps, lever taps and door handles, and non-slip floor treatments.
• Complex home modifications generally cost more than $25,000, affect the structure of the home or need custom work, and require building approvals. The NDIS also funds a building construction practitioner to plan the work.

Yes. The NDIS needs a home modification assessor, such as an occupational therapist, to recommend the changes your home needs before modifications are funded.

What happens during a home modification assessment?

Our OT visits your home, watches how you move through daily tasks such as showering, getting in and out of the house and using the kitchen, takes measurements, and talks with you and your family. We then write a report with specific recommendations for your NDIS plan or funding body.

Yes. We can liaise with your builder or tradespeople so the modifications match the recommendations and are installed correctly.
