Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a qualified Occupational Therapist to assess your current functional abilities and limitations. At Core OT, our experienced Brisbane-based therapists conduct mobile FCAs in the comfort of your own home, ensuring the most accurate picture of your day-to-day function.

FCAs are used to inform NDIS planning, support coordination, and workplace assessments. They provide a detailed report that outlines your current functional capacity and the supports required to help you achieve your goals and maintain independence.

Who Needs a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment may be recommended for:

  • NDIS participants requiring evidence for plan reviews or initial planning meetings
  • People with disability needing formal documentation of their support needs
  • Aged care clients transitioning between care levels
  • Individuals with acquired injuries or neurological conditions
  • Children and adolescents with developmental delays or complex needs

What Does an FCA Include?

Our Brisbane FCA service covers a thorough assessment of:

  • Activities of daily living (ADLs) including personal care, meal preparation and domestic tasks
  • Mobility, transfers and safety in the home environment
  • Cognitive and executive function
  • Communication and social participation
  • Vocational and community participation capacity
  • Equipment and home modification needs

Following the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive written report with clinical findings and recommendations.

Is an FCA Funded Through NDIS?

Yes. Functional Capacity Assessments are funded through the NDIS under the Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living support category. Both self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants can access FCA services through Core OT. We are unable to service NDIA-managed clients at this time.

How Long Does a Functional Capacity Assessment Take?

An FCA typically takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the complexity of your needs. Our therapist will visit you at home to conduct the assessment, then prepare a detailed written report for your NDIS planner or support coordinator within the agreed timeframe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an FCA and a standard OT assessment?
An FCA is a specific, comprehensive report used to document your overall functional capacity for NDIS planning. A standard OT assessment may focus on a particular area such as home modifications or assistive technology.

Can I use my FCA report for a plan review?
Yes, an FCA report from Core OT can be submitted as supporting evidence for your NDIS plan review to justify current or increased funding.
